Our New Office K2: Finally Ready!

We were bursting at the seams!

About 140 people are working together in our office on the 5th floor of the LuisenForum in Wiesbaden at the moment. We feel very comfortable and we've already had many good times here: Just recently we planted our roof terrace garden together! However, increasingly, our lack of space and the available office area on the 8th floor of the neighboring ESWE tower in Kirchgasse 2 (we lovingly call it "K2"), resulted in us putting our spatial expansion on the agenda.

We could probably get by with our office space, but for some time we have been feeling the challenges that the lack of space brings. Our offices started feeling less 'cool' as more and more colleagues sat together in the team areas and the free space gradually disappeared. We experienced every day how useful large meeting rooms would be; And we also lacked places to withdraw to for telephone calls or concentrated work. This naturally became quite annoying over time.

To make the new rooms in K2 fit in perfectly with us, my colleagues Sandra and Jo, with the energetic support of an interior designer, have completely redecorated and transformed the new office into a small feel-good oasis. Well done! There are three meeting rooms, an open kitchen, a lounge and co-working space, and last but not least, a green billiard table! Yeah!

Another plus: the new office is just one step away from our 'headquarters' in the LuisenForum.

Our flexible seating plan

We have decided to run a small experiment in the new office and have introduced a flexible seating concept. Excuse me? Flexible? What do I do with my family photos, the cactus, and all of my personal bits and pieces? Does no-one know where they'll be sitting tomorrow morning? What does this mean for each of us? These questions and a few more were asked internally, which is why we took the time to agree on a few basic conditions.

Here are some details:

  • There are planned team offices, in which each team can freely settle, so long as this is meaningful.
  • Of course, any colleague is allowed to sit in the same place each day.
  • However, it is still not 'your desk' and 'my desk'. That means: When it makes sense that colleague X should use colleague Y's desk, so that they can more easily collaborate on a project with another colleague seated nearby,  then colleague Y should be prepared to find another desk to work at.
  • That also means: Everyone should tidy their desks every evening so that someone would feel happy using it the next day. You don't need to remove all of your private photos, but it should be neat and clean. This requires a little bit of discipline. But it's also nice for all of us, to arrive at an office not littered with used coffee mugs each morning.
  • When in doubt, personal items can be stored in a locker.

Recently, we were able to put our additional office in Kirchgasse 2 with room for around 30 people into operation. We are very happy about the change, the unpacking and our recovered "leg freedom" in the main office, and we are looking forward to having a great time in the new office! More than a few billiard games will most certainly be in our future. 😉
