Atlassian Summit 2018: The most important news from the product keynote

Atlassian Summit is the biggest yearly conference event run by the Australian software company, with customers and partners from all over the world attending. Once again, Barcelona is being a fantastic host city (3-5 September).

We are in Spain with a large team, especially because both draw.io and Linchpin are sponsors! Of course, we are here to meet you, our customers, partners and Atlassian employees, hear your thoughts and answer your questions.

The conference is packed with events: Yesterday there were many training sessions for customers, an opening keynote about Dream Teams, and a community evening. The second day of the Atlassian Summit 2018 (today!) focuses on products - and the biggest and best news is saved for the main keynote with product updates and announcements.

This keynote ended a short time ago, and we were there, both in person and watching the live stream. You can also sign up and watch the Summit live stream.

What can you expect in the short and medium term?  Here are the most important notes from the keynote by Atlassian founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar and their colleagues.

New product: Jira Ops

With Jira Ops, Atlassian has introduced a brand new product to centralize all information and processes for corporate incident management. It integrates Statuspage, information and features from Jira Service Desk, Jira and Confluence, as well as various third-party tools such as Slack in one central location to be the basis for a powerful, flexible incident response workflow. To support this, Atlassian has announced they will acquire OpsGenie and take advantage of these new opportunities to expand the capabilities and scope of Jira Ops.

Jira 8.0

Jira Server and Jira Data Center has been given massive performance boost in the upcoming version 8, especially boards: Atlassian once again promises a significant increase in both stability and speed. Jira 8 will also bring in customizable settings for batch notifications by email for users and administrators.

Mobile apps for Jira Server

After the release of the native mobile apps for Confluence server deployments, Jira will soon follow suit: Mobile apps for Jira Server will soon be released. Youwill be able to use such core features as search, comments, issue transitions, etc. on your mobile devices.

New search function for Confluence

With the next major release, Confluence Server will have a completely new, faster and more user-friendly search. By default, it will display all results live instead of on a separate search page.

Code insights for Bitbucket Server

The new code insights feature for Bitbucket is aimed at a deeper integration of the third-party tools used by development teams. Code insights will make all information from such systems immediately available and visible in pull requests in Bitbucket Server.

Stability and performance for Data Center apps

Data Center customers use on average more than ten third-party apps in the Atlassian ecosystem. Because of this, Atlassian is rolling out the Data Center Approved for Marketplace Apps program to ensure performance and stability. This  includes architecture reviews and performance tests.

More announcements for the Cloud products

Of course, the Cloud products were not neglected in the keynote speech. Here, too, the Atlassian team has announced various small and large innovations:

  • Significant performance improvement for all Atlassian Cloud products
  • New regional data centers for the Cloud infrastructure, including in Frankfurt am Main next year
  • Automatic user provisioning via Atlassian Access for all Atlassian products, including Trello
  • After discontinuing its own instant messaging and group chat solutions, Hipchat and Stride, Atlassian has announced a new integration between Slack and Confluence Cloud.
  • New features for Jira Cloud: Jira issues have been redesigned to have a logical, consistent arrangement and clear separation of information types; there's a completely new rich text editor for Jira issues; a new custom field designer; and users will now be able to create projects (and not just administrators).

That's a wrap for our notes from the product keynote. As soon as there is more in-depth information about these announcements, we will provide you with details here in the blog.
