Agile remote transition – life as a distributed employee in a local Scrum team

Experiences and lessons learned from remote collaboration

The //SEIBERT/MEDIA team has grown a lot over the past few years, so much so that we are now spread across three different offices in the center of Wiesbaden. But we haven’t stopped there when it comes to employee distribution: We have a few colleagues who live so far away that they work from home permanently.

One of these remote employees is Paul Pasler, who together with his family moved to the town of Reutlingen in the Swabia region a few years back. He is a member of a Scrum team that works on components for our Linchpin intranet suite. As a result, there are a number of obstacles to overcome when it comes to remote teamwork – from the continuous need for coordination within the team to the numerous face-to-face meetings that are a part of the Scrum process (daily standups, reviews, retrospectives, etc.)

Over time, we have gained a wealth of experience with this kind of collaboration and learned many lessons. Not only are these useful for related situations that could perhaps become a more common part of our work in the future, but they can also serve as inspiration and provide best practice standards for other teams and organizations, where distributed teams play a role.

Paul has already shared his experiences in a series of blog articles and recently summed them up in a talk (also remote) at the Tools4AgileTeams Conference 2018 in Wiesbaden (you can watch his presentation in German).
